Full Harbor Breeze Ceiling Fan manuals come with each new ceiling fan purchased. Check your box the fan came in. If you don’t have the box the ceiling fan came in and you threw your manual away like me, then you may contact Lowe’s directly request a new manual be sent to you. See below for more ways to get your fan’s manual:

I’ve always had good luck finding the fan manuals at the product page of the fan online. In many cases, Lowe’s has a link to a PDF version of the fan titled “Product Information: Installation Guide”. This is almost always an exact copy of the manual that came with your fan in the box.

These manuals tend to contain some fairly general information, some of which I’ll explain here.

Safety Information

In general, you should follow these guidelines when unpacking, installing, or repairing your ceiling fan.

  • You should not throw away the foam inserts that were packaged with the fan. If for some reason the fan needs to be returned to the store, you’ll need these inserts to re-package the product to ensure it doesn’t suffer any damage.
  • Ensure that the area where you install your fan has at least 7 feet of clearance between the fan blades and the floor. Also, make sure to have at least 30 inches of space between the tip of the blades and other objects on or near the ceiling.
  • When installing or repairing the fan, make sure all of the wiring is in compliance with your local codes, ordinances, and the National Electrical Code. Or, better yet, hire a qualified electrician to help with the process.
  • After installation, double check that all connections are secure and the fan won’t wobble (or jar loose) during operation.
  • Avoid hurting yourself by wearing gloves. Watch out, many of these fans can have sharp edges!
  • Don’t ever use the fan with a solid state speed control device and don’t control the speed using a dimmer switch. Doing so could put you at risk of fire or electrical shock.
  • Be careful not to bend the blades during installation (and cleaning, balancing, etc). This can cause the fan to become dangerous during operation.

Preparation

Before getting started with the installation, there are a few things you should do. First of all, you need to make sure all of the parts are present in the box (find out what you’re supposed to have in the “Package Contents” list in the manual). If any parts are missing (or damaged) do not try and put the fan together, instead you should contact the manufacturer to order replacement parts, or to return the fan.

There are a few things you should definitely have on hand to put together and install the fan:

  • Electrical tape
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Safety glasses
  • Pliers
  • Wire strippers
  • Stepladder

And here are some helpful (but not required) tools to have with you are:

  • AC Tester Light
  • Tape measure
  • Wire cutters
  • A “do-it-yourself” wiring handbook

Putting together and installing a fan usually takes about 2 hours.

Operation Instructions

  1. Most fans have a pull chain, which you can use to control the speed of the fan. It is usually located on the switch housing.
  2. Most fans also have a reverse switch, which should be used to reverse the direction of the blades depending on what season it is. When the weather is warm outside, use the Down position on the reverse switch. This will make the air flow downward. In cooler times of the year, put the switch in the Up position to make air flow upward (which recirculates warm air on the ceiling).

Care/Maintenance

Two times a year you should lower the canopy so you can check the downrod assembly and re-tighten all the screws. Also make sure you clean the motor housing and blades (with a lint-free cloth). Some people even prefer to apply some furniture polish to wooden blades for more protection.
