The CuisinArt DCC-1200 is perhaps one of the most reviewed and consumers preferred drip coffee maker. It is not too expensive, but also not too cheap. It is sturdy enough, it comes with a 3 year warranty, and if you are not extremely particular about the flavor of your coffee, it will satisfy you with an above the average brew.

I love finding appliances that actually surprise me in how consumer-orientated they are. With the Cuisinart DCC-1200, you’ll discover many small details that simplify getting your daily cup of coffee. But, you will also find some hiccups in design and overall reliability.

Performance & Functionality

This coffee brewer is capable of delivering up to 12 cups of coffee. So, you can cater to your entire family or office without a doubt in your mind.

Its functionality trumps many other machines because of the many buttons you can use to customize your coffee making.

I know we all love ‘one touch’ technology, but it’s often confusing. How will one button help you brew the perfect cup? I feel the range of switches on this unit takes the guesswork out of the process.

Taste

Pick your favorite type of ground coffee and add it to the filter basket. This machine can handle light and oily dark roasts just the same.

Your coffee will always taste good as long as you take the time to clean the machine. Thankfully, the DCC-1200 has automatic alerts to remind you when it is time for some simple maintenance.

The charcoal filters that come with this machine are handy, especially when your taps provide heavy water. Unwanted particles that can affect the coffee’s taste will be filtered out.

Design

At first look, you might not appreciate the design of the DCC-1200 unit. It appears to be rather simple, and it does not really stand out from coffee makers that are twice as expensive.

However, a closer look at the machine might change your first impression.

The Cuisinart has sleek surfaces made of black (or red) plastic and brushed metal. This looks modern and easily matches most other kitchen décors (except for the red).

You can choose the red coffee machine with the black carafe, or alternatively, opt in for a red carafe as well. I personally do not like the red as a color for kitchen appliances, so I stuck with the black one for the purpose of this review.

The overall design of the carafe is a bit disappointing. It is practically impossible to get the last of the coffee without completely turning the carafe upside down.

The layout of the DC-1200 is clever, as it allows easy access to all components:

Make sure you place it where there’s enough clearance so you can easily fill up with coffee or water.

Durability

The unit has both plastic and metal parts. Metal is, of course, more durable than plastic, but because you won’t move the machine a lot, there’s no real chance of these parts getting damaged.

Unlike many other glass carafes, this Cuisinart jug can be placed in the dishwasher, so it’s more durable than most.

Brewing Speed

Your brew will be ready in under 10 minutes (12 cups). The good thing is that you do not have to wait for the brew to finish in order to enjoy one cup of coffee. You can remove the carafe at any point and time of the brewing process because there is a non-drip feature. This option prevents the machine from dripping coffee when the carafe is not placed on the plate.

The machine seems capable of reaching 195° to 205° F and maintaining it for 5-6 minutes. This is the ideal brewing temperature, and it certainly adds some quality to the final taste of the coffee. It is good that this relatively inexpensive coffee maker can maintain that temperature.

Brew pause: The brew pause feature prevents coffee from filtering down if the carafe isn’t in place.
Smart filter: Make your coffee healthier with the provided charcoal filter for tap water. If you’re already using filtered water, you can simply leave out this one.
Dishwasher safe: You can wash the glass carafe in the dishwasher, making clean up easy.
Cup settings: Prevent energy and coffee wastage by using the 1-4 cup setting to brew small amounts of coffee.
Gold-tone filter: Instead of purchasing new paper filters all the time, you can now simply use the gold lined one.

Ease of Use

I appreciate clear directions and this machine comes with a few of them:

Cleaning/Maintenance

I love that machines now think on our behalf. You don’t have to put cleaning on your calendar because this coffee maker will tell you when it needs to be decalcified. The unit has a self-cleaning feature, so all you need to do is:

Add vinegar to a full tank of water
Press the button labeled ‘Self Clean’
Wait for the ‘Self Clean’ light to start glowing
Turn on the machine
The machine will clean itself and deposit water in the carafe
Run clean water through the unit
Replace the charcoal water filter (if you use one)

When it’s time to give the machine an exterior clean, you’ll love the non-stick feature on the heating plate. You won’t have to scrub hard to remove sticky particles. It’s also scratch resistant, so you can use any general cleaning utensils.

Final Thoughts

Get this machine if you’re looking for a sturdy coffee maker for your kitchen. There’s really not much the Cuisinart missed out on the DCC 1200 model. Yes, it’s a bit on the heavy side, but most coffee brewing machines are stationary anyway, so it shouldn’t put you off.
